New CMS report on the role of the Danish parliament in defence policy
Danish defence policy is undergoing a fundamental transformation these years. The threat landscape is worsening, defence budgets are rising sharply, and a new ten‑year Defence Agreement is changing the political processes that govern defence policy in Denmark. This raises important questions about how the Danish parliament can best exercise influence over – and maintain oversight of – defence policy, while also ensuring that the significant public investments in Denmark’s defence are democratically grounded.
The new CMS Report Folketinget i forsvarspolitikken: Nordiske perspektiver, danske udfordringer therefore examines the defence‑policy process in Denmark with a parliamentary focus. This is done through a comparative analysis of the role played by parliaments in defence policy across the four Nordic countries: Denmark, Norway, Sweden, and Finland. The report highlights several challenges in Denmark regarding the need to secure adequate parliamentary scrutiny of defence policy, as well as sufficient democratic anchoring and transparency within the field of defence.
