New CMS Report: Russian influence campaigns in Africa

Russia’s influence in Africa has grown significantly in recent years and has taken on renewed strategic importance in the wake of the war in Ukraine. At the same time, it has become increasingly clear that Russian engagement on the continent is not only manifested through military and economic activities, but also through less visible influence campaigns. These campaigns play a central role in Russia’s efforts to strengthen its position as a global actor and influence political processes in African countries.

Against this backdrop, the CMS Report Russian Influence Campaigns in Africa: Entry, Electoral Influence and Fragmentation analyses, how Russia uses influence campaigns as a strategic tool. The report presents a typology of three key forms of influence and illustrates these through a series of case studies from African countries. On this basis, the report discusses how Western actors can counter the challenges that these campaigns pose, and finally the report formulates specific recommendations for Danish decision-makers.
