New CMS Background Paper: Militarization of Space – in an International Law Perspective
Space has become an integrated part of modern warfare. In 2019, NATO declared space as its fifth operational domain. By 2021, nearly 20 states had the capability to launch objects into space for military purposes. No state has yet attacked another state's space object, but the increasing militarization of space means that such attacks are virtually inevitable.
The new CMS Background Paper: “Militarization of Space – in an International Law Perspective" discusses issues related to space-based armed conflicts, the increasing militarization of space, and how the Law of war should be applied within this domain. Professor at CMS Kevin Jon Heller authors the background paper.
