Maria Mälksoo joins the Centre for Military Studies
Maria Mälksoo joins the Centre for Military Studies (CMS) as a Senior Researcher from September 1, 2021. Mälksoo comes from a position of Senior Lecturer in International Security at the Brussels School of International Studies, University of Kent and before that the University of Tartu, Estonia.
A graduate of Cambridge University, Mälksoo’s research interests include security, deterrence, small states in alliance politics and NATO, the Baltic states, Poland and Russia, as well as critical security studies, international relations and social theory, and the politics of memory. Currently Executive Secretary of the European International Studies Association (EISA), she is also the President of the Central and East European International Studies Association. In addition to her university positions, Mälksoo has also served as a Foreign Policy Advisor to the President of Estonia, as Chief Expert on policy planning in the Estonian Ministry of Defence as well as a researcher for the International Centre for Defence Studies (ICDS) in Tallinn.
The Head of CMS Henrik Breitenbauch says: “We at the Centre for Military Studies are proud and happy to attract a rising star like Mälksoo. She will further strengthen CMS’s research profile in academic research on defence and security – and also brings with her excellent credentials as an expert practitioner in foreign and defence policy, which we will put to use in our work for the parties to the Danish defence agreement.”
The Head of the Department of Political Science (DPS) Nina Græger says: “I am very much looking forward to having Mälksoo as part of the CMS and DPS team. She will further strengthen our international profile as well as the bridge between our IR research group and the centre.”
