New CMS-report: From The High North to Outer Space
How can Danish ambitions in the space domain and the desire for a stronger military presence in Greenland and the Arctic support one another? This question is explored by Anders Theis Bollmann in the new CMS Report Fra det høje nord til det ydre rum: Styrket militært rumfokus og dansk sikkerhed i Arktis. The commercialization of space has made military space capabilities accessible to small and medium-sized states, and renewed focus has emerged on strengthening Denmark's military presence in the Arctic because of the current U.S. administration's Greenland policy.
The report analyzes how these two agendas can be translated into concrete synergies, including through space cooperation within NATO, the EU and NORDEFCO, through the involvement of the Danish space industry and research community, and through the integration of space capabilities into Danish Defence and NATO operations in the Arctic. The report assesses that the acquisition of Denmark's own Arctic space capabilities, such as a satellite constellation equipped with ISR and SATCOM capabilities, as well as a ground station in Northern Greenland, could strengthen both the military presence in the Arctic and Denmark's position in space-related defence policy. At the same time, the report emphasizes that an increased focus on space does not replace the need for a comprehensive Danish defence and security strategy for space.
