CMS co-hosts conference in Parliament on Nordic-Baltic defense and security
On Monday, September 9th, the Danish Parliament, together with CMS, hosted the conference titled “A New Era in Nordic-Baltic Security and Defence: Challenges and Opportunities After NATO Enlargement”. The conference gathered decision-makers and experts from across the Nordic-Baltic region and beyond to discuss the ongoing changes in the security policy landscape and what challenges and opportunities they create for regional cooperation.
The conference was opened by the Minister of Defence, Troels Lund Poulsen. Researchers from the Centre for Military Studies contributed as moderators during the three panel discussions at the conference.
The conference's first debate focused on the current state of regional cooperation on security and defence, including in NORDEFCO. The discussion addressed similarities and differences in threat perceptions and priorities among the Nordic, Baltic, and Arctic regions, as well as new opportunities for regional cooperation. The debate was moderated by Niels Byrjalsen.
The second debate discussed the regional challenges related to the protection of critical infrastructure and hybrid threats. It focused on current and future issues related to Russian activities as well as on identifying key challenges and solutions for decision-makers across the region. This debate was moderated by Tobias Liebetrau.
Finally, Kristian Søby Kristensen moderated a debate on the challenges that regional states face with regards to organizing and funding security and defence, parliamentary oversight of security and defence, and efforts to create resilient societies in a rapidly shifting security environment.
