Bring European Finance Ministries into Geopolitics
If Denmark and a number of NATO member states in Europe do not, this year, present concrete plans for increasing their defence budgets, the United States will moderate its commitment to the alliance. This warning came from Secretary of Defense, James Mattis, at this week's NATO defence ministerial. Discussions will continue along these lines today between high-level decision-makers at the annual Munich Security Conference.
Today in War on the Rocks CMS Director, Henrik Breitenbauch, argues that in order to reach a consensus on increasing defence budgets in the European countries it is necessary to increase the awareness of geopolitics among the finance ministries in Europe. Breitenbauch proposes that NATO should invite finance ministers to join future alliance summits and consultations.
