CMS Seminar: Crisis in the International Order – Regional Perspectives

The rule-based international order is in crisis. With the fundamental disruption of US foreign policy under the Trump administration and ongoing wars in Ukraine, the Middle East, and elsewhere, international politics are increasingly marked by uncertainty and conflict. This state of affairs raises difficult questions for global and regional great powers as well as small states around the world. All states now must consider how to play – or adapt to – a more conflictual type of politics, following other rules and logics than those prevailing in the post-Cold War era. They also have to consider whether and how the old order could be reformed or whether something new must be built.

This seminar will explore how states navigate the turbulence of the emerging international landscape. We examine the main dynamics of the crisis of the international order – and ask how the crisis plays out across different regional contexts: in the Indo-Pacific, in Europe and the Nordic region, in Africa, and in the Middle East. The seminar provides a range of insights that can inform public debate and decision-making at a moment when Denmark and its Europeans allies reconsider their foreign, security, and defence policies in a more challenging international environment.

The panel consists of:

  • Distinguished James McGill Professor T.V. Paul (McGill University)
  • Professor Anders Wivel (University of Copenhagen)
  • Associate Professor Katja Lindskov Jacobsen (University of Copenhagen)
  • Postdoc Henrik Lauritsen (University of Copenhagen)

Moderator: Niels Byrjalsen (University of Copenhagen)

The seminar is organized by the Centre for Military Studies, University of Copenhagen, in cooperation with the "Rivalry in International Politics” project, funded by Independent Research Fund Denmark.

The seminar will open with introductory remarks from each panelist, followed by audience questions in a Q&A session. The language of the event is English.
