Seminar: Subaltern Clausewitz

Clausewitz is the prophet of modern strategic studies and his classic 'On War' sets the conditions for thinking about historical and contemporary warfare. In this seminar, Dr. Shane Brighton takes you under the surface of Clausewitz's 'On War' and explores a hidden theme of great importance for today's relationship between the West and the rest. As reflected in Clausewitz' own experience of comparative modernity in Prussia’s defeat by revolutionary France, this subaltern Clausewitz rationalises the relationship between savagery and civilisation - indicating how a ‘civilised’ and ‘civilising’ form of war is as central to the Western way of war as the practical utility more often attributed to it. Dr. Shane Brighton is Lecturer in International Relations at the University of Sussex.

The seminar “Subaltern Clausewitz: Comparative Modernity and the Fates of Military Europe” will take place on Wednesday, October 23, 15:00-16:30 at the Center for Health and Society (CSS), Faculty of Social Sciences, Øster Farimagsgade 5, 1353 Copenhagen K, building 4, in room 4.2.50.
